About Cerebral Palsy. A Resource for Parents and Families.
Vacuum Extractors and Vacuum Extraction

A vacuum extractor is an alternative to forceps in assisting the delivery of a baby. It is a suction cup that is placed over a baby's head, and allows the physician to pull the child out through the birth canal. A vacuum extractor is easier to attach than forceps and is less likely to injure the baby or mother. Excessive use of vacuum extraction during delivery may increase the risk of cerebral palsy.
