Teenager Proves Medics Wrong; Student Beats the Odds

A teenager with cerebral palsy has defied medical experts who said he would never walk and is now studying at Barnfield College.

Martin Watts, 18, has beaten all odds and leads an ordinary life, after years of physiotherapy, speech therapy and family support and encouragement.

At 18 months old, doctors told Martin’s parents that he would never walk unaided and spend life in a wheelchair.

But after a hard struggle, including a major operation involving a tendon transfer at 10 years old, which made a big difference to his mobility, Martin is working hard towards a BTEC First Diploma in software and hardware support and leads a busy social life.

Martin said: “You must never let a disability get in the way. It is no big deal, it is a matter of adjusting your lifestyle. There is nothing in life you cannot do. One of my best mates cannot see in one eye. We go around a lot together, helping each other out.”
