California Superior Court Awards 96 Million Dollars

In August 2007, a Glendale California Superior Court jury awarded an estimated 96 million dollars in future damages to a child who developed a neurological disorder caused by untreated jaundice shortly after his birth four years ago at Verdugo Hills Hospital.

According to the lawsuit, the child exhibited several risk factors for kernicterus, a neurological disorder that can cause developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and hearing loss, when he developed jaundice shortly after birth.

The untreated jaundice was a sign of the buildup of bilirubin, a yellow bile pigment, produced in greater quantities than a baby’s liver can excrete. The jury found that the doctors and medical staff should have been alert to the possibility that this buildup could be life threatening and given the child the appropriate medical treatment required to reduce the bilirubin buildup.
